Music of the 1930s Even though America was struggling through the Great Depression in the 1930s, they were able to escape their unfortunate lives through entertainment. Through the popularity of the radio, more and more people managed to obtain the most popular music of the time. Many different kinds of music became infamous during this time. Just some of these styles are Jazz, Swing and Big Band. Folk Music was also popular as were Pop Performers such as Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, a couple who sang and danced. Country Music was also introduced in the 30s.
Folk Music Heroes Folk music has been a standing tradition in American History, and there is no better folk music than 30s folk music. Woody Guthrie and Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter were no exception. Woody Guthrie was a singer and song writer from Oklahoma, a balladeer who quickly rose in popularity with a patriotic song still known today as “This Land is Your Land.” Leadbelly was an African American singer who wrote about being black in the 1930s. Some go as far to say that he was the original King of Blues.
